My last memory of Sonya will always be the Friday afternoon before she passed away; laughing and talking about our dogs. She often spoke proudly of Patrick and she had that Illinois spirit of determination and honesty.

To the family of our beloved Ms. Sonya:

I write this with a heavy heart, so saddened by this sudden loss of someone who meant so much to our family, but also thankful for the privilege of having had her in our lives.
Ms. Sonya was so much more than a bus driver to Hayes and Drake—she was a bright spot in their school days, someone they loved and trusted and wanted to be near. They loved sitting up front and chatting with her to and from school and having her to themselves as one of the last stops in the afternoons. She went above and beyond her duties as a bus driver, giving them unexpected gifts and even supporting their little egg business—she was their best customer, as they liked to say, and a beloved name in our house. Hardly a day went by that they did not come home talking fondly of Ms. Sonya.

She was an answer to prayer for us as well, as we sent our kids back to in-person school last fall, praying for them to encounter educators and employees that would care for them willingly and well in such uncertain times. The joy I saw in Ms. Sonya at the bus stop each day was such a comfort. She truly seemed to love her job and the kids in her care. I can still hear her happy voice telling them good morning, calling them by name. We often pray that our kids will do whatever work is set before them whole-heartedly. Ms. Sonya was a shining example of that. We will miss her dearly, and we will remember her always as an inspiration. She is truly a testament of the impact a single person can have on the world around her.
Our whole family mourns the loss of Ms. Sonya, and sends our prayers for comfort to your family during this time.

With love,
The Humphries Family (Macedonia Elementary Bus 451)
